Orphan (dir: László Nemes, prod: Mike Goodridge, Gregory Jankilevitsch, Ildikó Kemény) received a four-star rating from critic John Nathan in The Jewish Chronicle. In his review, Nathan states that the film examines survival, memory, and identity in post-war Hungary. The film draws on elements of Nemes’s family history and addresses the impact of the Holocaust and the 1956 Hungarian uprising against Soviet rule.
Set in Budapest in 1957, the film follows Andor, a Jewish boy who survived WWII raised by his mother with the tale of an idealized dead father who perished in the Holocaust, and his confrontation with a brutish man who claims to be his real father.
