Synopsis

Hitler’s Eye uncovers one of the last major undiscovered archives of the Nazi era and reveals how images were used to sustain a dictatorship.

Created by Walter Frentz, Adolf Hitler’s personal cameraman, this extraordinary collection follows Hitler from his rise to power to his final days. Young, ambitious, and trusted, Frentz was granted rare access to Hitler’s private world. He captured scenes of comfort and routine while genocide unfolded beyond the frame. These images were not innocent records. They were carefully shaped to influence how Hitler and his regime were seen, both inside and outside the inner circle.

Preserved in secrecy for decades, the archive contains more than 20,000 photographs, films, diaries, and letters. Together, they reveal how visual ideology was carefully built inside Hitler’s inner circle and how illusion became a form of governance. The collection exposes the strategic thinking, self deception, and moral collapse at the heart of the regime.

After Frentz’s death, his son Hanns-Peter inherited the material and has chosen to make it public, confronting both history and his own inherited guilt.

Through unprecedented access, historical analysis, and personal testimony, Hitler’s Eye shows how images manufacture reality and how their consequences endure across generations.

About the Director

Dror Moreh

Dror Moreh began his career as a Director of Photography and became one of Israel’s leading documentary filmmakers and cinematographers. During his career, he shot award winning feature films and documentaries. His works as director includes The Gatekeepers, (best documentary nomination at the 2012 Academy Awards, best nonfiction film of 2012 by the National Society of Film Critics, best documentary by the LA Film Critic, Cinema for Peace Award Berlin 2013), Sharon (Official program «panorama» at the 58th Berlin Film Festival), The Human Factor (Sony Pictures Classics, 2021), Corridors of Power (Telluride Film Festival 2023), and Dagan (the life story of Mossad head).

Director’s Statement

In Hitler’s Eye, my goal is to fully immerse audiences in the private world of the Nazi inner circle, granting rare access to moments never intended for public view. Through interviews with those closest to Walter Frentz’s legacy and selected historians, the film explores the psychology, power structures, and inner lives of Hitler’s circle.

Frentz’s intimate photographs allow us to witness both the banality and self-importance of the regime, revealing how propaganda and personal mythmaking shaped their reality. These images place us inside rooms where catastrophic decisions were made, exposing the contrast between everyday life and unimaginable cruelty.

This project continues my lifelong exploration of how power functions behind closed doors and how destructive choices take form. Hitler’s Eye offers a deeply unsettling, reflective look at one of history’s darkest periods.
